Building confidence at a four-year high in 1Q2022

Good news for estate agents is that the sentiment in the building sector, as measured by the FNB/BER Building Confidence Index, rose to 40, from 34 in 4Q2021. This marks the highest confidence since early 2018. However, the “core” building sector index (excluding hardware retailers and building material manufacturers) was at 31, from 27 in 4Q2022.

Tax ceiling proposed for SA

SPEAKERS CORNER: The South African Institute of Chartered Accountants (SAICA) says South Africa should revisit the possibility of lowering its tax-to-GDP ratio and introducing a tax ceiling. In a presentation to parliament recently, the group said the tax-to-GDP ratio is used as a measure of how well the government controls a country’s economic resources and is a good gauge of a nation’s tax revenue relative to the size of its economy.
